1939 Martin D-18 guitar #73800
1939 Martin D-18: wide neck, scalloped braces!
1939 Martin D-18 73800I. Excellent condition, restored to original specs and set up for modern playing by legendary Martin Custom shop employee/repairman David Musselwhite in 2010. This guitar delivers the kind of crisp, clean punch that makes the Adirondack spruce-top and old growth Honduran guitars so desirable: clarity and balance all through the frequency range and yet a big bottom end that gives a dry bass without the boom of the rosewood guitars. And volume? Majestic!! This is a guitar that soundmen love as much as the player. Features include Adirondack top with scalloped bracing; small maple bridge plate; old-growth Honduran mahogany back, sides and neck; neck with rounded taper; ebony fingerboard with small pearl position markers, 1 3/4” nut width and 2 1/8” at 12th fret; original Brazilian rosewood peghead overlay with C.F. Martin decal; new period correct ebony bridge; new period correct tortoise-color acetate pick guard. No cracks, perfect neck profile and refret. Bridge and period correct re-finish by David Musselwhite, maintaining original finish on peg head overlay. The restoration work on this guitar is absolutely amazing, Mr. Musselwhite has brought this old war-horse into the modern era in a wonderful way, with utmost sensitivity to original specifications. And since it was in heavy use for so many years, that incredible well-played sound is intact, and with the restoration, this guitar is ready for another 70 years of great service! $25,000 includes modern case; free delivery east of Mississippi and shared costs to other destinations.
