1927 Gibson TG-1 8765
Beautiful, rare, all original tenor guitar from the classic era!
1927 Gibson TG-1 number 8765
An original, excellent condition tenor guitar from the classic era of Gibson guitars. Tenors in this condition are especially rare. Style TG-1, a four string tenor, was first released in 1927 with batch number 8721, with TG-1 8765 close behind as some of the first ones made. They appeared that year with a unique body size and shape and a slightly arched top. It was an invitation for mandola or tenor banjo players to have a guitar sound with a familiar tuning (in fifths, high to low: A, D, G, C), At the same time, it attracted guitarist who might want na high harmony instrument for a guitar ensemble, with their familiar tuning (E, B, G, D). The tenor guitar works either way, giving this rare example of an early TG-1 a foot in both worlds, and with the unique top, it is a cross between a flat-top and arch top in both look and sound. In other words, it functions beautifully as a gentler sound than tenor banjo, invites chords reminiscent of the beautiful guitar harmony of the Delmore Brothers. All original, this guitar features 12 5/8 inch wide body (at lower bout); slightly arched spruce top; mahogany back and sides; short straight beveled Rosewood bridge on larger base; extra pen in bridge base; bound top and back; 23 inch scale; bound Rosewood fingerboard with dot inlay and pointed end; diamond and curlicue peghead inlay (as on style 3 banjos of that era); “Gibson” in pearl; two-band nickel plated Grover tuners (as used on Gibson banjos in the 1930s); dark sunburst finish…and, oh! what a glorious early Gibson sunburst it is! Nothing says early cool like Gibson’s late 20s guitar shading. Now available for $2550, includes shipping in continental US.
